Sea of Data – 2025/ongoing

SEA OF DATA
Experimental photography & circuit bending - ongoing project, 2026
Sea of Data is a project that is only beginning to take shape.
The first two images were made during a journey through Japan in February 2026, while wandering along the winter beaches of Kada and Ubara. I arrived there almost by chance. Away from their summer activity, these seaside towns were nearly empty, and standing in front of the ocean gave me a strange feeling of having reached the edge of the world.
The project emerged from a feeling I have towards the increasingly connected world we live in. Social networks, endless streams of information, online economies, algorithms and artificial intelligence have become deeply embedded in our everyday lives. I am fascinated by these technologies, but also unsettled by their scale, their speed, and by how unequally we understand and navigate them.
This is the sea of data I imagine as an immense ocean of information and technological systems that we are collectively entering without entirely knowing where they will lead us. Standing before it, I feel very small, both fascinated and frightened by the century I live in.
Photographing the sea through a circuit-bent camera made these two landscapes feel like the beginning of that idea. Water and digital information seem to dissolve into one another, waves become noise, fragments, colours and streams of data.
For now, Sea of Data remains an open project. I imagine these images eventually becoming very large prints, and perhaps moving images made by returning to the sea with modified cameras.
These two photographs are simply the beginning
