ABOUT

I’m Camille Simon, a Belgian visual artist working under the name Maybel, based in Brussels. My practice explores what happens when the photographic apparatus stops being a transparent tool and begins to participate in the creation of the image. Through circuit bending, I physically modify digital cameras, creating disruptions whose results I can influence, but never entirely predict.

This loss of control is central to my work. I’m interested in the boundary between my own gesture and that of the machine: who is making the image when the camera begins to produce forms and colours that I did not consciously create? I see these accidents as glimpses into a kind of digital unconscious, possibilities contained within our machines, but normally kept invisible.

My recent work extends this research into landscape, transforming familiar environments into unstable and sometimes otherworldly territories. What if the glitch wasn’t an error, but a doorway into another territory?
